Do I need to declare my convictions?
How can I keep my costs down?
In order to provide the right cover, insurers need to know about your unspent convictions. Depending on the length of your sentence, criminal convictions become spent after a certain period of time, e.g. if you received a fine or were ordered to undertake community service, your conviction is spent after five years. After that time, it does not need to be declared to insurers.
If you are unsure, you should disclose all convictions and our experienced team at 1st Choice Insurance will be able to advise you on which need to be declared to the insurance company. If you’re unsure about whether a conviction is unspent, an organisation called Unlock have a calculator to help you can help you work it out. http://hub.unlock.org.uk/disclosure-calculator/
Failure to disclose relevant information about convictions could invalidate your policy and any claims would be refused.
- Raising your excess – this is the portion of an insurance claim that you pay yourself. You should ensure that this is realistic and that in the event of a claim that you can cover this cost.
- Lower your mileage – the less you drive, the lower your premiums
- Keep your car secure – keep your car in a garage and ensure it is fitted with an approved alarm and immobilizer.
