Mature drivers have had plenty of experience in the driving seat, something that many insurers value. At 1st Choice Insurance, we’ll use our extensive experience and knowledge to find you the right cover a competitive price.
Like many young drivers, mature drivers may find themselves surprised at how limited the market can be for their cover and whilst safety and experience may be ‘on your side’, when you reach a certain age, there will be fewer policies available to you, often combined with rising premiums.
In 2014, there were more than 7,000,000 drivers over the age of 65 on UK roads, making up 19% of all licence holders (Source: Institute of Advanced Motorists). This included over 4,000,000 drivers over 70 and a staggering 1,000,000 aged 80 plus. According to IAM records there were also 195 licensed drivers over 100 years old! Fair play!
This is partly due to us seeing more and more people working later and later in life, using their vehicles to travel to work, travelling to provide childcare for younger family members or just enjoying the freedom and independence of life out and about on the road.
Every driver over the age of 70 is required to apply for a driving licence renewal at 70 and every three years after that. At each renewal, the driver, by law, must disclose any new or any changes in medical conditions (that must be notified to the DVLA). The DVLA is then able to consider any changes, and if necessary, revoke the licence if the driver is not fit to drive. It should be remembered that failure to provide accurate and up to date information can result in a £1,000 fine and could compromise your insurance cover in the event of an accident.
Things for mature drivers to consider when taking out a policy include:
- Telematics (black box insurance) – your premium price will be linked to your driving behaviours and patterns. This also tends to work in your favour if you donǯt drive much during rush hours or at night and keep a low mileage.Telematics insurance policies use a small box fitted (discreetly) in your car, usually under the dashboard or in the glove compartment, or alternatively, some insurers use a mobile phone app. Your driving is then measured and monitored via GPS satellites and your premiums based on the results.
- Mileage – if you only do low mileage on an annual basis, for instance, mostly going into town and back or regular trips for the school runs, make sure the insurer knows this when providing a quote as it can lower premium prices considerably
- Add a named driver – sometimes adding an additional named driver can reduce your premiums. Be very clear about who the primary driver is though, to ensure that you don’t fall into the trap of ‘fronting’ as this will invalidate your insurance.
