4 Safety Tips for Driving a HGV at Night
Long hours on the road can lead to fatigue and tiredness when driving a heavy goods vehicle (HGV). It’s important to stay alert while driving so you can keep yourself and other motorists safe on the road. It is also crucial that HGV companies understand this. If it can be proven one of your drivers has been overworked, your business could be held liable.
Driving while tired is as dangerous as driving under the influence, and it’s equally important to take precautions and regulations when driving at night.
Driving in the dark brings a unique set of challenges to drivers, so be sure to follow these tips to stay safe on the road.
- Use your full beam.
Many truck drivers only ever use their regular headlights, but as long as you’re not within 200m of an oncoming vehicle, it’s safe to use your full beam. In areas with limited visibility or no streetlights, driving with your full beam on will enable you to see and avoid any obstacles on the road.
- Consistent sleep schedule.
As a HGV driver, you may not always be able to sleep on the same schedule you would at home, but if you try to keep your sleep schedule consistent, you will have an easier time falling asleep and will get better quality sleep. When you get enough good sleep, you’re less likely to experience fatigue or drowsiness while driving. If you start to feel tired or sleepy, pull over to your nearest service station or lay-by and take a break.
- Avoid looking directly at oncoming lights.
Looking at bright lights from oncoming vehicles can cause temporary blurred vision. It can take several seconds to recover from the glare, and that can be dangerous for you as well as other motorists.
- Be vigilant
Take extra care when driving around residential areas so you have time to react if someone happens to step out in front of you. Cyclists can be difficult to spot when it’s dark too, especially if they’re not wearing reflective clothing. You should also watch out for animals darting out in front of you, particularly on country roads where nocturnal creatures are active. Keep your speed down and always be on guard for any unexpected movements.
