First things first, how do I apply for a provisional driving licence?

The earliest you can apply for a provisional driving licence is three months prior to your 16th birthday, however, you will not be permitted to drive until you are 17 and you will have to be accompanied by an adult over 21 who has held a full licence for a minimum of three years.

If you are in receipt of or have applied for the mobility component of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP), then you can start driving at the age of 16.

You’ll need to apply for a Government Gateway account to access the online service (http://www.gateway.gov.uk). Then once this is active follow the link to https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence. If you apply online, you should receive your licence in approximately one week.

Alternatively, you can apply by post by completing a D1 application form, which you can get from the DVLA form ordering service or from a Post Office. Postal applications take up to 3 weeks.

OK, I’ve got my provisional licence and I’m ready to drive!

Unfortunately, due to (typically) the driver’s young age and lack of experience, insurance companies view learner drivers as high risk and more likely to be involved in an accident. However, you should never consider not getting insurance and our team at 1st Choice Insurance can use their specialist knowledge of the insurance market to get you a good deal.

Tips for lower insurance premiums:

  • Go for a car with a relatively small engine…you don’t need a car that goes 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds!
  • Ensure there are no modifications to the car
  • Add a named driver to your policy
  • Put a limit on your mileage
  • Ensure your vehicle is secure: immobilisers, wheel locks and tracking systems increase security and reduce the chances of your car being stolen
  • Keep your car somewhere safe -ideally in a garage, or as a minimum on the driveway overnight
  • Consider a policy that monitors your driving behaviours with telematics/black box technology
  • Be sensible! Keep to the speed limit, observe road signs, follow the Highway Code

Remember, you must display ‘L’ plates on the front and rear of the vehicle to indicate to other road users that you are a learner driver. You are not permitted to drive on the motorway on a provisional licence.
